SisterFriends is a volunteer effort to support healthier moms and babies. SisterFriends provides support to pregnant moms and their families until their baby’s first birthday. SisterFriends is a community movement to create a circle of care around Detroit families.
Who is a SisterFriend?
A SisterFriend is a:
volunteer with the heart to help a pregnant mom (“Little Sister”).
mentor who listens to her Little Sister’s real issues and challenges, provides support and does not judge
resource who connects a pregnant mom to community resources in support of her health and the health of her baby
friend on a mission: healthy Little Sister, healthy baby.
A SisterFriend must be willing to do the following:
Connect. Connect weekly with a Little Sister for at least 18 months
Help. Promote, track, and help a Little Sister overcome obstacles to prenatal care and connect to needed resources.
Come Together. Attend a one-time 3-hour SisterFriends training, and attend monthly Baby Bunch meetings.
Be There. Be on-call (“Birth Watch”) for a Little Sister during her labor and birth experience.
A SisterFriend volunteers, mentors, supports and connects her Little Sister to community resources in support of her health and the health of her baby.
Compassionate. Desire to work with pregnant women, babies, and families. Willing to be a non-judgmental support and mentor.
Committed. Able to make at least an 18-month commitment.
Reliable. Timely, hardworking, and supportive.
Trustworthy. Able to handle private information that may be shared by your Little Sister.
What Are The Benefits of Being a SisterFriend?
The biggest benefit is the connection with other Sisters in the community, both your Little Sisters and a network of SisterFriends. SisterFriends serve an important community need and often become like extended family to their Little Sisters.
Volunteer support is provided to SisterFriends, including monthly meetings with other SisterFriends, quarterly continuing education opportunities, and an annual gathering.
SisterFriend volunteers who choose to be listed are recognized in SisterFriends web, print, and social media.
SisterFriend volunteers are also eligible for sponsored professional development opportunities and trainings.
